Hybrid Cars with Infineon at the Olympic Games

Neubiberg, Germany and Beijing, China – July 21, 2008 – Modern electronics made by semiconductor manufacturer Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX) will be used during the Olympic Games this year. Chang An, a Chinese automobile manufacturer, has equipped a number of its vehicles in the “Jiexun” series with a mild hybrid engine and opted to use Infineon's power electronics. The hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) will be used as taxis for athletes and spectators during the Games. Based on unit volume sold, Chang An is the fifth-largest Chinese manufacturer of cars, micro-vans and light commercial vehicles.
HEVs are equipped with a combustion engine and an electric motor. Vehicles in the mild-hybrid category are able to store the energy created when braking in the battery in order to use it later for the electric motor, for the driveaway or overtaking, for example. The power electronics used play a large part in increasing the efficiency of the hybrid engine.
Compared to current mild-hybrid solutions, Infineon has succeeded in reducing the size and the weight of the electronic control unit and the power electronics by one third. Measuring approximately 20 x 30 x 10 cm – about the size of a standard shoebox – a system based on Infineon's power electronics weighs only 15 kg. In addition, it reduces electric power losses by up to 20 percent. The electrical energy saved here can then be used again for powering the HEV. Experts estimate that a mild-hybrid vehicle with regenerative braking and acceleration consumes about 15 to 35 percent less fuel than a conventional combustion engine.
On an international scale, Infineon ranks second in the production of chips for automotive electronics and claims 9.4 percent of the total market of approximately USD 19.3 billion. According to a recent study conducted by Strategy Analytics, an American market research firm, from May 2008, this puts Infineon behind the world leader by no more than 0.9 percentage points.

Designed for use in "mild" HEV vehicles, the Infineon HybridPACK(tm)1 power module contains all power semiconductors for the inverter and an NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) resistor for temperature measurement. The module is based on Infineon's leading-edge Trenchstop(tm) Fieldstop IGBT and emitter controlled diode technology. HybridPACK1 reduces the size of HEV electronic control systems by one third to only 20 x 30 x 10 cm and a weight of about 15 kilos.

Chang An, a Chinese automobile manufacturer, has equipped a number of its vehicles in the "Jiexun" series with a mild hybrid engine and opted to use Infineon's power electronics. The "Jiexun" with hybrid drive has a velocity of at least 160 km/h. Its fuel consumption is approximately 9 l/100 km. It fulfils EURO-3-Norm and features, for example, ABS, driver and assistant driver airbag and central control lock.
