Greenhouse Gases Emission
Global warming is one of the most challenging environmental issues as we enter the 21st century and reducing energy consumption is just one of the ways in which we can help to protect our environment. Another major environmental challenge is the need to reduce emissions. We recognized this at an early stage, as evidenced by our voluntary commitment adopted in 1998 to reduce perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) which are classified as greenhouse gases.
Infineon Reduction of PFCs
Even though the semiconductor industry is not the major source of greenhouse gas emissions, Infineon Technologies is well aware of its responsibilities and determined in 1995 to voluntarily reduce our absolute PFC emissions to ten percent below 1995 values by 2010, calculated in carbon dioxide equivalents.
Thanks to our employees’ ingenuity in finding alternative process chemicals and our intelligent approaches of abatement systems, we achieved this ambitious target three years ahead of schedule in FY2007, meaning that we actively contribute to climate protection.
As the curve in the figure shows, our real emissions illustrates, we have consistently continued to apply the concepts described even after surpassing our voluntary commitment and in 2010 our reduction is 57% better than the established target.
Infineon Ecologic Balance
We have calculated our environmental burden based on our manufacturing processes, transport, travels, materials, chemicals, emissions, water consumption and waste water values and it is equivalent to 1.000.000 tons of CO2.
On the other hand, through high energy efficient products, we enable 4.655.000 tons of CO2 savings, which means Infineon enables a net ecological benefit of 3,6 million tons of CO2 reduction per year.
