Technical Marketing

Our colleagues from the Technical Marketing identify the need to develop new products for our customers and creating target specifications in close collaboration with product marketing, development and customers. Johannes Schoiswohl from Villach explains what makes this job so exciting.

Overview

As a member of the technical marketing department, you will help our customers around the world use the latest products. You have the technical responsibility for a product group in one of our business segments.

Your tasks consist of:

  • Providing technical product support and helping customers with their calculations, for example, to determine the configuring for the current and voltage or the life expectancy of our products

  • Discovering design-in potential for our products around the world and acting as the interface between the customer, sales and the Infineon departments as part of the subsequent development phase

  • Writing a variety of technical documents such as technical papers and articles,

    technical fighting guides and application notes, and preparing product comparisons and datasheets

  • Identifying the need to develop new products for our customers and creating target specifications in close collaboration with product marketing, development and select target customers

  • Advising our customers around the world on technical issues so they can use our products optimally

  • Representing Infineon Technologies AG when visiting customers, at trade fairs, conferences and training courses

  • Analyzing a wide range of exciting and promising target applications such as wind turbines, central PV inverters, industrial drives, power supplies, the public transport system as well as hybrid and fully electrical utility vehicles in order to define the application-specific technical requirements

You have the following skills:

  • College degree in electrical engineering, information technology, physics or equivalent

  • An understanding of technical requirements

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Fluent in German and English, and preferably one or more other languages

Our responsibility: making sure the products we develop work with the customer’s applications. To do this we need to understand the applications and customer systems first. We translate the requirements into product specifications for the Infineon development team. After production, we validate the products in the customer's application and also serve as the contact for any questions that may arise afterwards. Documentation is also part of our job: from the data sheet to publication in professional journals.

Since we cover a wide field of applications, this takes a skilled and knowledgeable team. My main job? To lead this team and do the strategic work: designing the roadmap, for instance.

There is no typical day - every day is different. During the ramp-up phase of a server platform at our customer’s where our products are in use, the interaction with the customer is top priority. But you actually deal with other work areas every day too: validating other products, or approving a text for a science journal.

We work in a very broad field with a lot of disciplines. This includes communication and positioning in marketing and concept work in technical development. Sometimes it’s a balancing act. I see this as a challenge - but also as a great stimulus.

It is very important, that you have a great technical understanding while at the same time excellent communication skills. This job is similar to that of a translator. Because we translate customer needs into technology parameters, which can then be used in development.

The design win with the customer is the goal we’re working for. When that works, it’s always a highlight. I'm also responsible for my products throughout the development cycle: from the customer’s approval to validation right on through to implementation.

When you work within such a broad spectrum, it’s natural for you to like some things better than others. To a great extent, this depends on personal preferences. If I could, I’d like to spend more time in the lab.

I studied physics and applied for a job at Infineon in Villach when I graduated. In preparation for my position in Technical Marketing, I worked in the technology development my first year. I have now been working in Technical Marketing for seven years – three of them in the US. I think the field is still exciting and I also enjoy passing on my experience to participants of the Junior Talent Program, that we have in Austria.
