Overview: Tasks & Requirements

Development engineers are problem solvers. Your most important task? Developing new modules or improving products that have already been launched. You have to take the needs of the market and the customers into account before you can successfully offer the new products.

This involves an intensive collaboration with departments such as marketing, quality, production and product engineering, along with chip development and production. You work in various areas, including technology, concept, process, product, case and test development.

As a technical expert in the project teams, I focus on the electrical characterization of power semiconductors, IGBTs and diodes that are contacted and connected with each other in so-called modules in various ways.

When new technological processes are developed for the production of power semiconductors, for example, I test their properties in the module and compare these with already existing products. This means that I consider which kinds of electrical measures are required to answer the technical questions and evaluate the results of the measurements. These decide whether or not the new processes can be introduced.

The greatest challenge of my job is to understand how process changes affect the electrical characteristics of the components and their function in the application during the production of the modules and the power semiconductors themselves. It is therefore important to recognize, understand and summarize correlations. Analytical thinking, communication and the ability to work in a team are important factors in this process.

The highlights of my job: working in international teams across all company locations and achieving goals together. I’m proud to be directly involved in the development of products that so significantly improve the energy efficiency of the end products.

And with internal and external training, I can constantly advance my skills.
What I wouldn’t like: If not everyone is pulling together to achieve the predefined goals. But thanks to the good work climate and good teams, I have never come across such a case.

In my studies and during my doctoral thesis work, I focused on semiconductor physics, which is why I searched specifically for positions in the semiconductor industry. Now I’m glad that I can apply these experiences at my new job.
