Comneon Announces General Availability of its APOXI Application Framework Software for Mobile Phones

Jul 26, 2006 | Market News

Munich – July 26 – Comneon GmbH, a leading supplier of software for mobile phones, today announced that its widely deployed APOXI ® Application Framework for mobile phones is now generally available for licensing to all producers of mobile handsets. The newest version of the Framework, APOXI 3.0, features a customizable interface for fast and efficient porting to various mobile phone platforms. Since the cost share for the software of a mobile phone is expected to increase from 5 percent today to 7 percent by 2007, software affordability and utility become more and more important. By licensing its proven APOXI solution to mobile phone manufacturers and chip designers, Comneon is responding to the growing market demand for feature-rich application framework software for mobile platforms and devices.

APOXI has shipped in multi-million quantities since 2003, powering a variety of handset models designed by leading mobile phone companies. The platform was previously only available as part of the mobile phone platform portfolio offered by Infineon Technologies. Handset manufacturers and mobile phone chipset and platform providers can now take advantage of APOXI and employ a single application framework software suite throughout their multimedia phone product lines. The APOXI Application Framework is now available under the terms of a development licensing program to enable quick, low-risk and low-cost designs.

As application and user interface software development and integration have become complex, multidimensional tasks, mobile phone manufacturers and network operators alike are keen to limit the number of software platforms that must be supported. Mobile phone manufacturers look to re-use software investments across their entire portfolio which leads to faster time-to-market and lower costs. Network operators, on the other hand, are concerned about quick availability of new features and applications across a wide range of products, while keeping qualification efforts and costs at a minimum. APOXI, a mature and field-proven solution, answers these needs.

“Software is the single most complex component of a mobile handset, and it consumes enormous amounts of time, human and financial resources. By making our proven and established APOXI Application Framework available for open licensing, we are responding to an urgent market demand for reduced complexity and a more predictable cost structure across the entire range of mobile phone platforms,” said Dr. Christian Mucke, head of Comneon. “While standardized, openly licensable software platforms have already been adopted by the smart-phone segment, we see a clear need for a similar offering in the mainstream feature-phone market. With millions of mobile phones already powered by APOXI, we allow our customers to enjoy the economy of scale needed for further reduction of software-related costs.”

The APOXI Application Framework is a powerful application programming interface middleware platform and application development environment for mobile phones. It features a rich set of interfaces in the areas of multimedia, connectivity, graphical user interface and Java support. In combination with its comprehensive host development environment, including its powerful ARAGON look-and-feel user interface editor, and an established mobile application developer program, APOXI is a complete application framework product suite.
