Infineon Extends Industry-Leading Portfolio of Power Semiconductors With Extended MOSFET Family and New Fan Motor Controller

Baltimore MD / Munich, Germany – October 26, 2005 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE/NYSE: IFX), the world’s leading supplier of power semiconductors, announced two new products today at the Power Systems World trade show in Baltimore, Maryland.
  • The CoolMOS™ CP series of metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) extends the company’s portfolio of chips for high-efficiency power supplies used in telecommunications, notebook computer and consumer appliances. Like the previously announced CoolMOS CS series, the new devices feature the industry’s lowest on-state resistance.
  • The TDA21801 Fan Speed Controller IC (integrated circuit) is used to create a flexible, low-cost subsystem to control the speed of power supply cooling fans used in such applications as personal computers and high-end electronics equipment such as computer file servers, and industrial and medical equipment.

CoolMOS CP 600V MOSFET
 
CoolMOS CP MOSFETs are intended for the PFC (power factor correction) and PWM (pulse width modulation) stages in medium-level power supply applications, such as telecommunications, notebook adapter and consumer devices.  The new products have a voltage-blocking capability of 600V in a wide variety of package types.  The exceptionally low on-state resistance and low gate charge allow designers to significantly reduce the conduction and switching losses of power supplies.  For example, capacitive losses at 400V can be reduced by 25 percent.  Reduction of conduction and switching losses drives increased efficiency, and enables engineers to raise the power subsystem clock speed, leading to highly efficient, compact power supplies.  Alternatively, power supply output can be increased without changing other aspects of the design, resulting in lower system cost per watt of rated power.
 
Based on a technical breakthrough that allows them to overcome the so-called silicon limit for performance, Infineon’s CoolMOS devices offer the industry’s lowest on-state resistance, which increases power supply efficiency and reduces system cost. The 600V CoolMOS CP family achieves an area-specific Figure of Merit (FOM, which is defined as on-state resistance multiplied by silicon area) of approximately 2.4  Ω*mm 2 (ohms X square millimeter of silicon).  This allows CoolMOS CP devices to achieve on-state resistance figures of from 125 mΩ (milliohms) to 385 mΩ, depending upon package type.
 
According to market research company iSuppli ( “Power Management Market Tracker,” Q3 2005), the market for power management MOSFETs is expected to grow by a compound annual growth rate of 9.1 percent per year,  from $4.6 billion in 2004 to approximately $7.2 billion in 2009.
 
At a typical price of between $0.70 and $1.80 in quantities of 100,000 (depending upon ohmic value) in a TO220 package, the CoolMOS CP series is available in the following packages:

TDA21801 Fan Speed Controller
 
The TDA21801 is an intelligent controller that allows manufacturers of cooling fan systems to deliver the functionality of a 4-wire fan using a lower cost 2-wire fan.  This yields significant savings by allowing use of a lower cost fan and in reducing the bill of materials by 25 percent.  A typical 4-wire fan solution with OTP (over-temperature protection) requires 27 components, while a 2-wire fan solution using the TDA21801 requires only 13 components.
 
The TDA21801 can adjust fan speed from 750 rpm to 4,000 rpm, which makes it ideal for applications requiring low fan speed to reduce noise levels.  Its OTP capability is easily implemented and flexible.  For example, it generates an over-temperature early warning signal to prevent data loss in case of thermal faults, and also generates a tachometer signal for additional system monitoring features.
 
According to the iSuppli power management market report, the market for power management voltage regulators is expected to grow by a compound annual growth rate of 8.1 percent per year, from $5.4 billion in 2004 to $7.99 billion in 2009.
 
The TDA21801 Fan Speed Controller is available in a RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances)-compliant SO-8 package, at a price of $0.70 in quantities of 50,000.
