Infineon, a leading supplier of chips for voice access, paves the way for next-generation IP telephony with a comprehensive suite of products

Oct 15, 2004 | Market News

Munich / Germany and Boston / USA – October 15, 2004 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE/NYSE: IFX), a leading supplier of chips for voice access, is displaying its extensive portfolio of feature-rich and highly integrated VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) semiconductor solutions at this autumn’s Voice Over the Net (VON) tradeshow at Boston’s Hynes Conference Center (October 18-21, 2004).

Infineon’s chipsets and solutions answer the demanding requirements of carriers and system manufacturers to further enhance the quality and reliability of VoIP and IP telephony products. According to a July 2004 report from TelecomTactics, a research institution that studies the VoIP market, major vendors around the globe are introducing IP telephones at a fast pace. The number of new telephone systems supporting IP telephony increased from only 20 per cent in 1999 to 100 per cent this year. In addition to new desk set models designed for basic, mid-range, and high-usage applications, vendors are also enhancing IP soft phones and introducing wireless IP handsets.

The integration of voice and data over one network offers consumers major cost reductions for telephony charges and value-added services such as support for several voice channels to serve multiple users over a single telephone line. Carriers benefit by eliminating the need for two separate networks - one pure voice and the other pure data - thus reducing operating and maintenance costs.

New products and demonstrations highlighted in Infineon’s booth (#931) include:

Enhanced software package that boosts the performance of IP telephones

The new LAN Phone SIP Software Package 1.0 complements Infineon’s single-chip INCA-IP hardware/firmware offering to provide a fully functional, interoperable, production quality solution. Supporting all standard TCP/IP networking protocols for plug-and-play functionality, the software solution also offers configuration and maintenance of the IP Phone via Web-based management. The voice specific modules are the main components of the software solution and include an adaptive jitter buffer, VoIP signaling protocols and the necessary extensions to support features like direct calls, proxy- routed calls, registration, Caller ID, Call on Hold, Call Transfer, Call Forwarding, Media Transfer Protocol and more.

Semiconductor solutions that adapt traditional telephone handsets to the digital world

Infineon offers a complete reference design for an Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA), which allows the upgrading of traditional telephone handsets to digital VoIP platforms. The combination of Infineon’s ADM5120P Network controller with its VINETIC family of analog voice access products makes for a complete home office/small office (SOHO) customer premises equipment (CPE) solution. The design provides two POTS interfaces for analog telephones and fax, four LAN interfaces for PCs, printers and other computing utilities as well as one WAN, one PSTN and two USB Host interfaces.

A new subscriber line interface circuit (SLIC) chipset optimized for customer premises equipment applications

Infineon’s new SLIC-DC is an advanced ringing SLIC with integrated DC/DC converter. DC/DC converters are necessary in all CPEs; however, with SLIC-DCs, system manufacturers can reduce the number of supply voltages on a board. The SLIC-DC needs only one (instead of three to five) external unregulated power supply to generate all the required voltages in traditional analog or VoIP CPE designs. Hence it offers a major cost advantage with a 20 percent reduction in bill of materials (BOM) compared to competing devices.
