Infineon´s QAM-VDSL Powers Telson I&C´s Broadband Access Platform

Munich, Germany and Seoul, Korea – June 16, 2003 – Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX) today announced that Telson I&C, a global leader in wireline and wireless communication technology, designed its new XV4000 broadband access system using Infineon’s flexible QAM-based VDSL5100 chip set to support 50/30 Megabit per second (Mbps) data rates and dynamic band allocation as specified in the Benchmark Test requirements of Korea Telecom. Telson is one of the main suppliers of VDSL equipment to Korea Telecom (KT), and is paving the way for Korea’s largest operator to provide broadband services at increasingly higher data rates.

According to a Morgan-Stanley report from March 2003, the South Korean broadband access market is expanding at a rate of 1.3% a month thanks to increased investment by its leading service providers. The report notes that KT has improved its market share to over 50% following the success of its VDSL program. KT has more than one million QAM VDSL lines already deployed and is now offering two VDSL based services: Standard 15/5Mbps and Premium 20/10Mbps. The company declared that it plans to upgrade its current ADSL installations with VDSL by 2005.

Fully compliant with all international standards requirements, the VDSL5100 is designed to support an aggregate data rate of greater than 100 Mbps, including asymmetric data-rates of 70/40 Mbps and symmetric data-rates of 50/50 Mbps over a single copper pair. The VDSL5100 features software controlled band plan and transport protocol selection, including native Ethernet and ATM to provide flexible band allocations across the entire VDSL standard-defined spectrum.

“With over 800 thousand ports already installed in KT’s network, all of them powered by Infineon’s QAM-VDSL chip sets, Telson has one of the largest installed base of VDSL system in the world,” said Christian Wolff, Vice President of Infineon’s Wireline Communications Business Group and General Manager of the Access Business Unit. “New broadband access systems designed with our advanced VDSL5100 solution will allow KT to provide revenue generating services such as video chatting using PC cameras, video conferencing, and video streaming and video on demand to every household and office connected to KT’s network.”
