Infineon's Octal-10BaseS Ethernet over QAM-VDSL Selected by Telson I&C to Enable Broadband Access in Nationwide Korean MTU/MDU Deployment

Jul 2, 2002 | Market News

Munich, Germany, July 2, 2002 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE/NYSE: IFX), a leading provider of integrated circuits for advanced communications systems, today announced that Telson I&C, a global leader in wireline and wireless communication technology, has selected Infineon’s Octal-10BaseS Ethernet over QAM VDSL chipset for its XV3000/XV1000 IP VDSL switch and customer premises equipment (CPE). Telson I&C’s VDSL platforms will be deployed as part of a nationwide Korean MTU/MDU initiative.

Mr. Chi-Il Kim president and CEO of Telson I&C said: “In order to design a winning solution that would meet the strict requirements of Korean operators we needed a stable, field proven technology capable of performing even under very harsh conditions. Furthermore, the chip solution had to provide high port-density and support a wide range of real-time online services such as video, interactive gaming and of-course plain old telephony. Only Infineon, with over four years of experience in VDSL and Ethernet over VDSL technology, managed to meet our every demand”.

Infineon’s highly integrated Octal-10BaseS is an 8-port Ethernet over QAM-VDSL chipset. Octal 10BaseS is used for extending Ethernet’s reach in in-building and campus broadband communication systems such as high-density Ethernet switches or IP-DSLAMs. The advanced 10BaseS technology allows for 10Mbps symmetric full-duplex Ethernet services over single-pair copper wires at distances of up to 4000ft (1200m) – saving the costs associated with deploying CAT-5 cabling. Infineon’s 10BaseS technology-enabled systems allow service providers to extend their IP service network over copper to customers who have been requesting Ethernet services yet could not be serviced before.

“Telson I&C and Infineon worked closely together in order to provide the best solution in terms of performance, cost and time to market,” said Chae Jong Wook, Country Manager, Infineon Korea. “The inherent plug-and-play nature of our chipset significantly simplifies design complexity thus reducing design time cycle and over-all costs. With an installment base of hundreds of thousands of lines, it’s no wonder our 10BaseS Ethernet over QAM-VDSL is the technology of choice for leading system providers worldwide,” he added.

About 10BaseS™

10BaseS is a highly integrated, low-power, Ethernet over VDSL quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) technology. The Ethernet throughput is full duplex 10 Mbps at 1200 m (4,000 feet). The line rate is programmable to reach up to 15.6Mbps, dependent on the distance between ends. Special implementations that support up to 25Mbps bit rates are also possible. 10BaseS transfers Ethernet packets transparently and is a plug and play technology, able to act as a PHY or MAC. Unlike other Ethernet solutions, 10BaseS does not require costly Cat 5 cabling as it makes use of existing copper pairs while supporting POTS or digital telephone service simultaneously on the same pairs.

Infineon’s Octal-10BaseS is a highly integrated system on a chip building block with CPU, clock, AGC and memory. It provides glue-less compatibility with RMII, SMII-interfaces minimizing design complexity, cost and time to market. Directly replacing standard Ethernet PHYs it can be used in switch or DSLAM applications. The existing 10BaseS single port chipset has the same interfaces and can also be configured as a media access controller (MAC) for standalone control of Ethernet PHY devices in CPE applications.
