Infineon Selects Sonim as Preferred Partner for Push-To-Talk - Adding Instant Voice Messaging Functionality to Infineon´s Mobile Platform Solution

Oct 29, 2002 | Market News

Munich, Germany and San Mateo, USA, October 29, 2002 – Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX) today announced that it has selected Sonim Technologies’ Instant Communications Platform for its APOXI™ (Application Programming Object-oriented eXtendable Interface) framework and development environment - an integral part of Infineon’s complete wireless system solution. Sonim’s Instant Communications Platform allows operators for the first time to deploy presence-enabled, instant voice messaging services such as Push-To-Talk over wireless data networks.

For wireless users, Push to Talk offers a new means of communicating with one or many individuals at the push of a button on a wireless device. With a Push-To-Talk enabled wireless device, a user can review the availability of contacts or buddies in the address book, similar to text instant messaging services like ICQ or Yahoo. Based on who is available, the user can simply push a button and start a Push-to-Talk dialog in a walkie-talkie or chat room like mode. Additionally, with the Direct Message service, a user can select one or many individuals in the contact list of the wireless device, create a voice message of any length and send it at the push of a button. As a recipient of a Direct Message, the user is alerted of a new voice message, and can retrieve that message instantly.

“Adding Sonim’s solution to our APOXI framework represents yet another key milestone in our strategy to provide our customers, with compelling solutions,” said Karl Lange, Vice President and General Manager Customized Wireless Solutions at Infineon. “Based on Infineon’s wireless design offering, manufacturers of wireless communication devices and mobile operators will achieve a significant time-to-market advantage for these types of ‘killer applications’, allowing them to differentiate themselves and create additional revenue streams. Most importantly, being the first provider of this solution, gives Infineon a clear market advantage in the highly competitive market for GPRS solutions.“

“We are excited to partner with a market leader like Infineon Technologies, who has demonstrated thought leadership in enabling its customers to build high-value applications.” said John Burns, CEO and president of Sonim Technologies. “The wireless industry recognizes that interoperability is a key to the success of new services, and working with leading vendors like Infineon creates the foundation for broad acceptance of Sonim’s Instant Communications solutions.”

Infineon and Sonim will market the joint APOXI/Sonim solution to Infineon’s large base of branded device manufacturers as well as original device manufacturers (ODM’s). The Sonim Instant Communications Client will be available on Infineon’s APOXI platform and supported by a wide range of Infineon chipsets. “APOXI is an excellent development framework for the Sonim Client as it allows us to leverage core functionality within the chip set, ensuring superior quality of service as well as minimizing power consumption”, said Bob Plaschke, Executive Vice President of Marketing at Sonim.

The Sonim Instant Communications Platform allows wireless carriers to deliver voice and text applications that fully leverage IP/SIP protocol efficiencies to generate high value traffic for 802.11, GPRS and 3G networks. The platform also leverages new codec technology with IP, which allows the solution to use a fraction of the network resources that would typically be used over a circuit network.

APOXI is an object-oriented framework and development environment designed to speed and enhance mobile application development, as well as to meet the special requirements for emerging applications on wireless communication devices. The APOXI framework is an integral part of Infineon’s strategy to provide a complete solution with a broad set of applications for wireless communication devices complementing a best-in-class protocol stack and high performance chip sets. APOXI has been developed by Comneon, a hundred percent subsidiary of Infineon.
