Infineon Introduces Industry's First OC-768 Silicon Germanium-based MUX/DEMUX Chipset at Supercomm to Take the Lead in the 40G SONET/SDH Market

Atlanta, June 4, 2001 – Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX), a leading supplier of communications and fiber optics IC solutions, today announced at Supercomm the industry’s first OC-768 (40 Gbit/s) multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) chipset for next generation synchronous optical networking/synchronous digital hierarchy (SONET/SDH) communication systems. The new chipset forms a core part of the company’s complete end-to-end line card solution for OC-768, and will enable makers of high-speed transmission systems to quickly implement emerging applications such as metropolitan area networks (MAN) at a competitive price.

“The optical networking market is expected to boom in the next four years with the OC-768 segment leapfrogging all other high speed transmission technologies,” said Christian Winkelmeyr, vice president of Infineon’s communications group and general manager of the high-speed communications business unit. “Along with the OC-768 SONET/SDH framing/mapping expertise, pointer processing and STS-1 granularity technology recently acquired from Catamaran, the chipset announced today is a key component of Infineon’s total solution for 40Gbit/s communication systems.”

Fabricated in the company’s market leading Silicon Germanium process, Infineon’s OC-768 MUX/DEMUX chipset also provides lower power consumption and larger scale integration than existing Gallium Arsenide and Indium Phosphide technologies.

The increasing demand for Internet and multimedia data is set to galvanize telecommunications carriers to deploy OC-768 transmission technologies that require vastly improved performance from ICs. According to Gartner Dataquest (Fiber Optic Food Chain, March 2001), the annual worldwide market for semiconductors used in fiber optic modules and physical layer ICs used for fiber optic communications is expected to reach US$11.7 billion in 2004.

MUX/DEMUX

Infineon’s multiplexer and demultiplexer are highly integrated circuits with 16 times 2.5 Gbit/s input channels multiplexed to a single serial 40 Gbit/s output data stream and vice-versa. The supported data-rates range from 39.8 Gbit/s up to 43 Gbit/s enabling out-of-band Forward Error Correction. The interfaces use Current Mode Logic, and both DC and AC coupling is supported. A 622 MHz and 2.5 GHz reference clock is provided and a Voltage Controlled Oscillator integrated onto each chip.

The multiplexer features Clock Management Unit functionality as well as a selectable 20 GHz and 40 GHz clock output to support both No Return to Zero and Return to Zero line coding, respectively. The demultiplexer integrates Clock and Data Recovery functionality with extremely high input sensitivity of 50mV. Both chips operate at a single 5.5V supply voltage.

Availability

The FOA4400 multiplexer chip and the FOA5400 demultiplexer chip as well as evaluation boards are now available.
