Infineon Extends Lead in SHDSL With the Industry's First Low Power, Single-Chip Single-Channel SHDSL Transceiver

Aug 14, 2001 | Market News

San Jose, August 14, 2001 –– Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX), a leading supplier of communications integrated circuits, today announced the availability of SOCRATES™ U, the industry’s lowest power single package symmetrical high-bit rate digital subscriber line (SHDSL) transceiver. SOCRATES™ U integrates all analog and digital functions including a Utopia interface and SHDSL framer on a single device, making it ideal for cost-sensitive, high performance integrated access devices (IAD), cellular base station systems and channelized voice over DSL (CVoDSL) applications.

“SOCRATES™ U is an excellent addition to our growing portfolio of SHDSL transceivers”, said Christian Wolff, vice president of Infineon’s communications business group and general manager of the carrier access business unit. “Specifically targetted at CPE applications, SOCRATES™ U allows customers to build an optimized solution that is cost-effective, and provides the richest feature portfolio available on the market today".

SOCRATES™ U: Integrated Single-channel SHDSL Device

Infineon is the market leader for integrating all high performance SHDSL features into a single SHDSL package. By combining the analog front end, line driver, microcontroller, tunable hybrid, framer, echo canceller, HDLC controllers and memory into a single 256-pin BGA package (18mm x 18mm), SOCRATES™ U significantly reduces the board space and power consumption required for access applications. For example, the total board space required for a complete SHDSL transceiver is less than one square inch, the smallest footprint of any comparable transceiver in the industry. In addition, very few passive components are required. The device also boasts the lowest power consumption on the market of less than 800mW, a figure 30 percent below competing solutions and matched only by its sister product, SOCRATES™ 4. SOCRATES™ U is fully compliant with ITU G.991.2 and ESTI TS 101524 standards. Utopia interface levels one and two are also supported as well as a universal time division multiplexing (TDM) interface. This TDM interface enables CVoDSL service.

SOCRATES™ U is one of the key products in Infineon’s SOCRATES™ product family which includes SOCRATES™ 4, an integrated four channel transceiver and SOCRATES™, a single channel SHDSL transceiver with TDM interface. SOCRATES™ passed strict DSL Forum G.SHDSL tests in June at Supercomm 2001 and is interoperable with SHDSL chips from other major SHDSL chip providers.

About SHDSL

SHDSL features a bit rate from 192 kbps up to 2.3 Mbps and is standardized by ITU G.991.2 and ETSI TS 101524. SHDSL provides roughly 25 percent more loop reach than currently deployed 2B1Q based SDSL technology and offers excellent spectral compatibility with other DSL services like ADSL. With interoperability an increasingly important requirement, SHDSL is well positioned to become the successor to all existing symmetric DSL technologies such as HDSL, HDSL 2 and SDSL.

Pricing and Availability

The SOCRATES™ U SHDSL single-chip single-channel transceiver, part number PEB 22623, is now available in sample quantities accompanied by a complete firmware and evaluation package. Housed in a 256-pin BGA package, SOCRATES™ U is priced at US$20 and will start shipping in volume quantities in Q3/2001.
