Internet Access via Satellite - Infineon Helps Deliver Broadband at up to 200 Times Dial-up Rates to Practically Anywhere
Munich, Germany November 27, 2003 Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX) has created a cost-effective solution for fast access to state-of-the-art broadband services in residential and office buildings. The solution, which is called Constellation, uses Infineons VDSL (Very High Bit-Rate DSL) technology to provide up to 200 times faster in-building transmission rates for Internet, video and multimedia applications. Since the data is transmitted via satellite the solution can be deployed anywhere in the world and can be installed in just a few hours. It provides apartment buildings, office complexes, hotels or hospitals away from population centers with cost-effective access to high-speed Internet, multimedia applications and corporate networks.
Many apartment and business buildings are too far away from a central office to use existing phone wiring for broadband access to the building or would require heavy investment in new infrastructures such as fiber-optic cabling. Therefore telecommunication operators have been looking for a quick-to-install and cost-effective solution. Together with its partners ViaSat in the U.S. and ZyXEL in Taiwan, Infineon developed the Constellation solution, which overcomes these obstacles by providing broadband access to the building via satellite. Within a building, the data is distributed with Infineons patented VDSL technology via the existing telephone copper wiring. By deploying Constellation the time to download a file of 10 MB size could be reduced to a few seconds compared to around 20 minutes with a conventional 56k modem.
The system is ready for operation in just a few hours as it uses wireless satellite access and the existing copper wiring in the building. This is a major benefit for operators who are now able to offer low-cost broadband access to their customers outside of major population centers. In high-density areas Constellation can be a competitive alternative as well since it requires only subscriber- and demand-specific investments into the customer equipment.
The combined data flow for the entire residential or commercial building is received and sent through ViaSat's two-way broadband LinkStar® satellite terminal. A receiver centrally installed in the building converts the data received via satellite into the VDSL format and transmits it via the existing phone wiring to the customer premises modems. Both the switches as well as the modems are supplied by ZyXEL and are equipped with Infineons VDSL chipsets.
The transmission of broadband data via common copper-wire phone lines is made possible by Infineons VDSL chipset. The chipset is specifically designed for multi-dwelling units and commercial buildings and millions of them have been installed in recent years in switches and modems.
The Constellation package is promoted by ZyXEL and ViaSat. The solution operates worldwide in all areas in reach of satellite and is supplied in the form of individual packages according to the number and needs of subscribers in multi-unit residential and commercial buildings.
