AMD, Infineon and DuPont Photomasks lay Cornerstone for Advanced Mask Technology Center in Dresden, Germany

Jun 4, 2002 | Market News

Dresden, Germany, June 4, 2002. Construction activities for the Advanced Mask Technology Center (AMTC) in Dresden, Germany started today with the ceremonial laying of the cornerstone. The AMTC is an equally-owned joint venture of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE: AMD), Infineon Technologies AG (FSE/NYSE: IFX), and DuPont Photomasks, Inc. (NASDAQ: DPMI). AMTC was established by the three partners to become a world-leading facility for the development and pilot manufacturing of advanced photomasks required for future generations of semiconductor products featuring design rules starting at 90 nanometers and moving to 65 nanometers and below. The new photomask facility will be located in the vicinity of AMD’s microprocessor plant Fab 30 and Infineon’s production and development site in Dresden.

In parallel with the creation of AMTC, DuPont Photomasks will establish and operate an independent state-of-the-art commercial photomask production facility in Dresden. DuPont Photomasks Dresden will be housed in the same building complex as the AMTC. Both projects are expected to be ready for equipment installation by the middle of 2003, with the first photomasks estimated to be available later that year.

Investments in the two new Dresden-based photomask projects are expected to exceed Euro 500 million over the next five years and will create approximately 370 jobs. AMTC investments are expected to amount to around Euro 360 million, approximately $328 million, and create approximately 170 jobs. Investment for the DuPont Photomasks Dresden facility is expected to be nearly Euro 170 million, approximately $155 million, and will provide jobs for another 200 people.

Representatives from the German Federal Government, the Free State of Saxony and the City of Dresden all welcomed the latest addition to the region’s high-tech infrastructure.

“Dresden's latest development and production facility will have a positive effect on the whole region and will decisevely strengthen its potential in the future. Mask technology is nano-technology - and nano-technology is creating jobs. This is one of the reasons why we want to support the AMTC Dresden. Indeed, it is a focus of our support for nano-technology in Germany.", said Edelgard Bulmahn, Federal Minister of Education and Research.

“There is no doubt that with the ambitious AMTC project and DuPont Photomasks’ investment in an advanced commercial facility, Dresden and Saxony have indeed become Europe’s leading center for microelectronics. A successful AMTC will greatly enhance the region’s competitive position in the international microelectronics arena”, said Prof. Georg Milbradt, Prime Minister of the Free State of Saxony.

Ingolf Roßberg, Lord Mayor of Dresden, pledged the city’s continued support for the microelectronics industry: “Further strengthening our microelectronics base will remain one of Dresden’s top priorities for the coming years.”

The Advanced Mask Technology Center GmbH & Co. KG is governed by a Partners’ Council consisting of equal representation among AMD, DuPont Photomasks and Infineon. The Partners’ Council has named Dr. Markus Dilger as the General Manager and Managing Director and by Dr. Tillmann Blaschke as the Deputy General Manager and Managing Director. Previously, Dr. Dilger was the head of Infineon’s mask house in Munich while Dr. Blaschke served as Director of Finance at AMD Saxony.
