Driving System-Oriented R&D from Singapore
Regional Hub for Asia Pacific
Infineon Technologies announced on 18 April 2007 its Research & Development (R&D) expansion in Singapore. In this expansion, Infineon plans to spend approximately 400 Million Singapore Dollars and add about 150 new positions in R&D over the next three years. This expansion reinforces Infineon’s position as the largest Integrated Circuit (IC) design team in Singapore.
Today, Infineon has over 2,700 employees in Singapore. More than 400 are R&D engineers, of which over 300 are IC design engineers in the R&D team. With the expansion, the R&D group will reach nearly 550 R&D engineers, where more than 400 will be involved in chip design.
Started in 1991, the Development Center in Singapore provides IC and system development solutions in the areas of Communication, Automotive and Industry as well as Security systems in this region. Singapore remains as the hub for Infineon’s R&D operations in Asia Pacific, and have dedicated responsibilities for coordination of regional setup and competence portfolios, enabling services for the region, as well as training and mentoring functions for the sites in the region. Today, it plays a leading role in a significant share of products rolled out from Infineon.
The Development Center in Singapore drives the whole value chain of IC and system development which includes all phases from System Engineering to Ramp-Up support for volume production and dedicated customer support.
An example of successful introduction of new products into the market is the Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)-Gateway product family with the Amazon-SE product as its latest achievement. Amazon-SE was launched in March 2007. Infineon’s DSL-Gateway family features an extensive product portfolio with single-chip solutions for ADSL2/2+ access, integrated Voice-over-IP and ADSL modem. This enables advanced Customer Premises Solutions for Internet Access Devices, IPTV and HDTV.
A Development and Customer Center for Mobile Systems was established by the Development Center in 2001 to provide strong customer support in Asia Pacific for its Ultra-Low Cost Phone Platforms. This center is involved actively in platform R&D, enabling responsive interaction between customer requests and system development.
In the area of Industrial & Consumer Markets, the Power Supply Design team defines, conceptualizes and designs the best-in-class power management semiconductor solution. This combines cutting edge power technology (CoolMOS™) and innovative control to bring the lowest standby power to electronics devices such as DVD players, set-top boxes, laptops and mobile devices.
With its competence in the design and development in 8-bit and 32-bit microcontrollers, the Singapore design team addresses the growing automotive and industrial markets of Asia. Close cooperation with our customers is the key ingredient for our success.
Additional core activities of Infineon’s R&D centre in Singapore are the Asia Design Hub for ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) customers as well as the wafer technology and IC package development operations.
